How to use this calculator

Start by choosing your project type and size, your fit: Tighter fit uses less yarn of course :D Cables and brioche create beautiful texture but takes more yarn than simple stitches.

For the yarn specifications, you need two infos. The yarn length from the label of the yarn you are testing here. The gauge is what you get from the pattern or you created your own. You don't have to buy any yarn yet. The calculator will tell you how much you roughly need.

This is for you if you have a knitting pattern and want to figure out your yarn needs. Perfect for beginners planning their first big project with a pattern in hand. Also great for experienced knitters who want to compare different yarn options or substitute yarns.

I'm really happy to finally have this here on my site after lots of tweaking. It was a great journey getting the estimates better and better and I hope it helps you plan your projects with more confidence!

Understanding the calculation

The calculator uses base gram values for each project type and adjusts them with different factors. Your stitch pattern matters a lot because cables and brioche use more yarn than simple knits. Size and fit also have a factor.Bigger sizes and looser fits naturally need more yarn.

I've tested and adjusted this logic with loads of patterns to get these factors as good as possible, but it's still an estimate. If you notice something seems off, I'd love to hear your feedback!

This is especially helpful when comparing different yarns. Maybe you're choosing between a 100g skein with 210 meters and a 50g skein with 120 meters. Run the calculation with both and see which makes more sense for your project and budget.

Tips for best results

Add a safety buffer. I recommend 10-20% for most projects. This covers small mistakes, tension variations, and those moments when you decide to make the sleeves a bit longer. I must say that I calibrated it without a buffer. That means I had better results without a buffer.

Use your pattern's gauge, not the yarn label's gauge. Labels show recommended gauge, but your pattern might call for something different. A fingering weight yarn can be knit at sport weight gauge with larger needles, completely changing your yardage needs.
